I'm reading The Letters of John Cheever which I purchased at my local library for $1. Four pages from the end I discovered this funny opinion regarding librarians:
On librarians I do speak with prejudice. The profession in general has always seemed to me like the legitimization and financing of an impulse to collect old socks. It has always seemed to enjoy people who would enjoy handling old socks, smelling old socks and legitimizing catagories [sic] of old socks. But then you know I am terribly prejudiced.
You can watch the 1968 film version of Cheever's story "The Swimmer" starring Burt Lancaster in seven parts on Youtube: Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5 - Part 6 - Part 7. Burt Lancaster is barefoot during the entire movie.
